Howard Dean Accuses Fox News of Racism
Howard Dean accused Fox News on Sunday of being racist in relation to the incident involving Shirley Sherrod. This accusation is nothing new. Sherrod was fired after a partial, out of context video of her speaking was posted on biggovernment.com. She was fired before Fox News picked up on the story and Department of Agriculture and the White House were left trying to defend the fact that they forced this woman to resign without giving her a chance to explain her side of the story or looking at all of the facts. Fox News did, however, play the partial out of context video on air.
The fact that Howard Dean accused Fox News of racism because of the Shirley Sherrod case is not so startling as his mention of a few other cases. He also accuses Fox News of “pushing a theme of black racism with this phony Black Panther crap and this business and Sotomayor and all this other stuff”.
There was a strong case of voter intimidation against the Black Panthers. The case was dropped when there was really no good reason for that. The Justice Department dropping a case of voter intimidation is a loss to civil rights that every American should be concerned with, no matter what their race is. Then you have a whistleblower claiming that the Justice Department dropped the case because the defendants were black. The Justice Department is not being honest about why they dropped the case, so wouldn’t it be worthwhile to investigate whether this decision actually did come down to racist politics instead of upholding the right to vote of American citizens? A reputable news organization should investigate such a story and should look to other sources when the Department of Justice is not giving good reasons for dropping charges in a case of voter intimidation.
Then there is the case of Sonya Sotomayor that Howard Dean also mentioned. Real news organizations will investigate nominees for such positions as being on the Supreme Court. In fact, that’s what journalists are for. And the racist attitude of Sotomayor is relevant to whether or not she should be on the Supreme Court. She had an obvious bias against nondiverse white men. Highlighting these racist attitudes is not racist, especially when a news organization is discussing a Supreme Court nominee. What good is having a news media if they are only being racist whenever they report on relevant information regarding nominees for the Supreme Court and cases of voter intimidation? That’s what they are supposed to do.
We need our news organizations to be watch dogs. We need them to bring us this information on these cases that do matter and are important. Fox News could have handled the Shirley Sherrod story more professionally, but there is nothing wrong with reporting on these other two stories. These are stories that are relevant and that news organizations should be paying attention to.
