What is a Prayer Wheel?
Use of the Prayer Wheel
The prayer wheel is to be spun when in use. It’s a tradition for the mantra Om Mani Padme Hum to be written in Sanskrit externally on the wheel. Tibetan Buddhist tradition believes that spinning the prayer wheel will have much the same meritorious effect as orally reciting the prayers.
Om Mani Padme Hum
Om Mani Padme Hum is the most commonly used mantra in prayer wheels. It’s said to be the resonant vibration that helps tune a human being toward enlightenment energies. It is believed that this mantra was given by Avalokatishvara (Sanskrit) or Chenrezig (Tibetan), meaning the ‘Lord who looks down,’ the deity that is the embodiment of compassion. Chanting this mantra is for harmonizing the one praying in the choral resonance of pure compassion. It has a calming effect and allows the person praying to tame, open and develop the mind.
Types of Prayer Wheels
Mani Wheel – is a hand prayer wheel with a cylindrical body mounted on a wooden or metal handle. The cylinder is weighted down with a cord or chain which allows it to be spun by a simple rotation of the wrist along with the mantra it contains.
Water Wheels – this prayer wheel is just a prayer wheel turned by flowing water. It’s believed that the water that touches the wheel becomes blessed, and carries its purifying power into all life forms in the oceans and lakes that it feeds into.
Fire Wheel – this wheel is turned by the heat of a candle or electric light. It’s believed the light that’s emitted from the prayer wheel purifies the negative karmas of the living beings it touches.
Wind Wheel – this wheel is turned by wind. It’s believed that the wind that touches the prayer wheel helps alleviate the negative karmas of those it touches.
Stationary Prayer Wheels – many monasteries around Tibet have large fixed metal wheels. They are set side by side in a row. Passersby can turn the entire row of wheels by sliding their hands over each one.
Electric Dharma Wheels – some prayer wheels are powered by electric motors. They are sometimes known as ‘Thardo Khorlo,’ and contain one thousand copies of the mantra of Chenrezig and many copies of other mantras. The Thardo Khorlo can be accompanied by lights and music if someone chooses to.
Digital Prayer Wheels – It’s believed that a GIF image on a digital prayer wheel website turns, causing waves of compassion to emanate in all directions to the surrounding area. It’s been suggested that the spinning of a hard drive (at several thousand rotations per minute) can act in similar function to a prayer wheel by saving an image of Om mani padme hum or other mantra on their local computer.
Internet-operated Prayer Wheel – this type of prayer wheel is a Stationary Electric Prayer Wheel activated over a web interface. Before turning the wheel, a wish or a mantra can be entered at the web interface. The user can watch the wheel turn via a webcam. See the following website for this type of prayer wheel at – http://www.manikorlo.org/index.php
